Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Help! Need some wailin'

After coming into the 21st century this morning, I am on a tear. I've set my general ringtone as the opening to the Dew from 1967-10-22.

NOW, I am trying to set one for when my ex-wife calls. I am looking for the caterwaulingest Donna out there. I need 5 to 20 seconds. I assume it will be a Playin' but don't know which one. Any help?

Thanks,
TOOTMO

1974-06-28 - Boston Garden. This one is from Scarlet Begonias. At the 4:31 mark. 13-14 seconds. Scares the crap out of my 3 year old girl every time. "Who is hurting that lady, Daddy?"

You know, I once read where Phil said that the only way to listen to certain types of 'dense' music like Charles Ives etc. was to just let it pass through you instead of focussing on it. Otherwise it would get too overwhelming and painful. I've found this to be helpful advice for Donna too.

With tears of laughter streaming down my face, how many seconds did you go on the Dew? Kick ass version btw.

As far as the reason for my tears, I believe this past year we had a thread on that. I can't (won't) help you find that very special wail, but you understand. That's combat pay.

To the 21st century and beyond!

Sorry I can't recall which show(s) in particular Donna goes vocal postal during a searing solo from Jerry near the end of Greatest Story Ever Told. I believe we're talking 1972 ... maybe '73?? Someone else here might have the specific date(s) at hand. I agree with the Playin' options - there are so many to choose from. Though, while the Playin' shrieks have shattered countless blissful moments, the Greatest Story ones have more of a demanding immediacy about them that might better suit your purpose.

Now there's 3 of us agreeing on the "demanding immediacy" point that you've cited. So here's an edited example to consider from the 1973 Roosevelt Stadium show's Greatest Story Ever Told that I witnessed.

4 seconds duration, 64kb/s mp3, 32 KB file size
single Donna howl sequence - a smidge of silence added at the end

16 seconds duration, 64kb/s mp3, 124 KB file size
four Donna howl sequences repeated

Yup--I think you're right; she destroys this song more than PITB on a number of shows...good call.

Roosevelt Stadium, July 31, 1973
Greatest Story Ever Told track has the perfect howlings for that ring tone
extract your ring tone howls here > 3:50 to 4:05

It's from Jerry Moore's copy. There's one other copy on LMA. I was there tripping that night in 1973 and I taped this show. My tape remains out of circulation. But I have a 3rd copy here at home. Greatest Story this night was performed after midnight, so officially this was played on Jer's birthday.

Love it! I have an eight second wail from PITB as an all-purpose ringtone (no ex to have exclusive rights to it). I use 3/23/74 - Dick's Picks 24 - it's about 3:45 in.

Wait until you're in the doctor's office and your phone rings. Loads of fun.

I've never seen that. Jerry looks spritely - I guess Atlanta isn't a good heroin town...
